Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!
Hi, I’m Cindy, after winning the Georgia State Bar Journal’s fiction contest in 2010, I developed the winning story into a full-scale novel. OUT FROM SILENCE was published in December of 2019, and is the first novel in the Thornton Mysteries series. My second book, THE REDEMPTION, will be published in February of 2021. A recovering attorney, I retired after thirty years of practice and began writing full time five years ago, although I continue to volunteer with Atlanta Legal Aid. I also have a Masters of Special Education, and taught school earlier in my career. I live in Atlanta, Georgia with my husband and schnauzer.
What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?
I began writing during a convalescence period following cancer surgery. It was a timid beginning but I kept at it. I took a questionable stab at a memoir then discovered crime fiction was my favorite genre.
Do you have any special writing habits?
I like writing very early in the morning before anyone is awake then again in the early afternoon through the end of the day. Breaking it up allows me to think and to get a few chores done.
When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?
I always have an outline of the entire story in mind. But I also surprise myself along the way.
In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?
The book I’m writing now has the potential of being my best book, but I’d like to think every book I write has that potential. My favorite book ever is “Love in the Time of Cholera” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
How do you feel after writing a book?
I feel elated on one hand but I always dread the editing- revisions process.

My current book , OUT FROM SILENCE, was released in December of 2019. Emma Thornton, the protagonist, is working on a law degree, raising twin sons, and taking on her first case, the horrific murder of a seventeen-year-old girl. The suspect, her client, is a young man who’s been deaf since birth. He’s had no training in communication with others, making Emma’s job nearly impossible. There are many more problems as Emma begins to unravel the mystery. She’s no pushover and deals with more than most lawyers during her investigation of the facts. Her life is in danger, but handsome Deputy Ren Taylor does his best to provide protection. It’s an engrossing tale, with complex characters, a sympathetic but profoundly troubled suspect, an attorney determined to find the truth, and an underlying evil built on pure avarice and narcissism.
Do you have a new release? When? We want details.
My next book, THE REDEMPTION, will be launched in February of 2021. In THE REDEMPTION, the second book in the Thornton Mystery series, Emma has moved to New Orleans where she has accepted a position as a clinical professor at a law school in the city. She accepts a case representing a sixteen year old boy who has been accused of killing two men at the Redemption housing project. Emma is confronted by the challenges of life in a new city and by the complexities of this difficult case.
