Colleen Eccles Penor

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!

Hi! My name is Colleen Eccles Penor, and I’m the debut author of DAEIOS: 140 FEET DOWN. Prior to writing my novel I wrote short stories, essays (one of which I won a prize for in the Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition), one short play, and some really bad poetry. I’m also a Certified Public Accountant and an Army veteran who served as a Military Police Officer. I learned many of the skills my characters use in DAEIOS while serving in the military.

What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?

I’ve been an avid reader and writer even before I was in grade school and have wanted to write a book for as long as I can remember. When my husband proposed to me in 2013, he included it in his proposal – “write the book you’ve always wanted to write, I will support you.” So I wrote DAEIOS. Now I only do accounting work during tax season and write the rest of the year.

Do you have any special writing habits?

I like to use a large artist’s pad for brainstorming and free-writing, making lists, and setting up timelines. I’m a visual person, so I also draw maps, graphs and other drawings that help me see my work before it goes on the page. DAEIOS has a large underground cavern in it that’s set up like a small city, and I made an elaborate map of it so I could describe the setting. The map was especially important for a chase scene.

When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?

I need to have a majority of the story in mind so I can use an outline. I found out the hard way while rewriting the ending of DAEIOS that I have to use an outline or I just spin my wheels. But I do get ideas as I write that expand on that outline or encourage me to take the story in a better direction – which I of course have to outline to the end of the story before I continue in that direction.

In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?

I have only written DAEIOS: 140 FEET DOWN, so it’s the best book I’ve written. My favorite book of all time is Gone With The Wind. I’ve read it every year since my mother gave it to me when I was 13. I never tire of revisiting the story – it feels like a long visit with an old friend.

How do you feel after writing a book?

Triumphant! Especially when I finished writing my first book. I don’t know if I can match that feeling with my next book. To have written a book, to have made my biggest dream come true, to have accomplished something that so many have not. It’s one of my greatest prides.

Tell us about your latest book and please put the link so our readers can find it.

My debut novel is DAEIOS: 140 FEET DOWN, a dystopian thriller with overtones of The Handmaid’s Tale, action, and revenge. It has 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon and is available in all formats. It’s dark, disturbing, and hard-hitting, and both men and women enjoy it. It’s about a young survivalist woman and her family who flee apocalyptic weather to an underground shelter called Daeios. Shortly after lockdown, the Elders who run Daeios announce that they’ll breed with all fertile females age 16 and above to repopulate the earth. Shea knows that she’s going to have to breed with a sadistic, elderly man and bear his child, or fight, risking her life and the lives of her family.

Do you have a new release? When? We want details.

I’m just starting on writing a mystery thriller and don’t yet have a release date. It’s about a female Native American empath, a retired FBI agent who sets out to find missing teenage twin girls during a violent coal mine strike.

Adina D. Grey is a USA Today and International Bestselling Author. She was born and raised in Italy so it's no surprise she has a huge addiction to coffee, dogs, and books. Her book addiction and passion for travelling led her into the creative world of words where she writes, blogs, and beta reads. Her writing covers various sub genres and tropes but she's a sucker for a HEA, this is a cliffhanger free zone. When she's not writing or reading you can find her entertaining her toddler and husband, and enjoying family life.
