Deb Hockenberry

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!

Hi! My name is Deb Hockenberry. I write children’s books for your entertainment, but if you’re not careful, you just might learn something!

What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?

There are so many little things the made me pursue writing, but I’ll try to single out one or two. When I was a child I spent a lot of time at my neighborhood library. I had read just about every book and read several books where I thought that I could write the story better. That was pretty arrogant of me, but this was the younger me. I already had the love of story-telling in me, so this launched me toward writing. As I said, there were several other events that kept pushing me in this direction.

Do you have any special writing habits?

Special writing habits? Hmmm. First, I develop the idea in my mind then write it down. At this point I just free write. From there, I create a formal outline plus a character chart. The character chart helps me flesh out the characters while the outline helps me answer questions about the story itself. Is it cohesive? Do I have all the details and facts in there? Then I’ll write the story itself and perfect it to my satisfaction. From there, it goes to my critique group. After I present it and get those helpful suggestions on improving it, it’s back to the drawing board. Then I re-submit it to the critique group. If it’s in great shape, I’ll look into publishing either traditional or self-publishing. Actually, this is my writing process.

When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?

No. As I said above, I’ll have the idea in mind, but I’ll write the story by free writing. Actually, I’ll let the characters write the story. This is so important. Listen to your characters!

In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?

‘Where Can We Have The Party?’ is my best book since it’s the only book I’ve written so far. I do have three or four other WIPs in the works.

How do you feel after writing a book?

Ahhhh! The feeling after writing a book is a feeling of pure joy! It is for me, anyway. I feel like I’ve really accomplished something.

Tell us about your latest book and please put the link so our readers can find it.

‘Where Can We Have The Party?’ is a children’s picture book aimed at ages three to eight-year-olds. I originally wrote it for pure entertainment, but after I read what I wrote I noticed that a couple of small lessons were there too. The book teaches problem-solving and doing things to make their friends happy. The buy link for ‘Where Can We Have The Party?’ is
