Author Interview

H.M. Shander

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!

Hey! I’m H.M. Shander, and I hail from Canada. I write sweet yet sensual contemporary romances, with guys next door type of heroes, and sassy and smart heroines.

What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?

I’ve always enjoyed writing and actually wrote my first novel back when I was fourteen. However, I entered the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) back in November 2012 and started writing more. A beta reader suggested I should pursue publishing that novel, and after making many more changes to the story (and hiring the editor and cover designer) I released my first novel in December 2014, and I’ve been writing ever since.

Do you have any special writing habits?

When it comes to writing, I wish I had a set routine or habit. Mainly, it’s when the mood strikes, or when I have more than thirty minutes of uninterrupted time (which is typically late at night.) Mostly, it’s just me, my laptop and a large bottle of water. Sometimes I’ll have music going if I need to be in a certain zone, but otherwise it’s just the quiet that keeps me going (I tend to zone out to the world around me when I’m in a writing zone.)

When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?

For the latest published series – the Accidentally in Love series – I had the story in mind and had a loose draft to follow. With the newest series I’m wrapping up edits on, it was total word by word and I couldn’t get the characters out of my mind fast enough until the words were written on the page. I needed to know what the characters were going to do and how the heck were they finally going to get together? That series had the first drafts of each written in less than ten days!

In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?

That’s like asking me to pick my favourite child – I can’t do it. Each of my stories has something special and meaningful in it, whether it’s a character trait or quirk someone dear to me has, or a special setting. It’s too hard to choose just one – they are all my favourites in their own, unique way. Same with my favourite novel I’ve ever read. I don’t have a favourite per se, but if it gets an emotional reaction of me, it’s a five star read.

How do you feel after writing a book?

When I type out the final words of a scene, it’s a bittersweet feeling. It’s great to have the story all out, but at the same time, it’s a bit sad as my time with the characters has ended – until editing time. However, once the book hits the publish shelves, it’s always a little scary. My hope is that most will enjoy what I’ve written and fall in love with the characters as I have.

Tell us about your latest book and please put the link so our readers can find it.

My latest book is the third and final book in the Accidentally in Love series – It All Began with a Wedding. Weddings in Vegas aren’t real, are they? Did Izabella get married in Vegas or not? She can’t seem to remember. A drunken haze of a midnight wedding almost seven months ago starts to surface. This is a problem for many reasons, but most of all because now her husband will be entitled to half of her grandfather’s lucrative pharmaceutical business if she doesn’t get the marriage annulled. And fast. Dr. Theodore Breslin is the black sheep of his family, choosing medicine over law. So when Izabella shows up asking for an annulment, giving him yet another black mark, he’s got some stipulations of his own. Desperate, she has no choice but to accept his terms–to meet his family and pretend they are together. When Theo starts taking an interest in Izabella and spends more time with her, strong feelings develop, feelings she wasn’t expecting or prepared for. Will she go through with the annulment and risk losing the sweetest guy she’s ever met for the sake of business, or drop the annulment and watch her grandfather’s business die in the name of love? Because in love and war, someone always loses.
