Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!
I am Shilah Ferr, author of the Coming of Age/New Adult Romance novel, April’s Heart. The story takes place in high school in New Jersey in the 80’s. Although a work of fiction it basically follows the outline of my life. Warning-explicit content!
What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?
My career is actually as a teacher. Writing April’s Heart has been a tremendous diversion, I’ve learned SO MUCH! But what prompted me was always the nagging thought that perhaps I had a book in me. I needed to figure out what it was. I had always kept diaries and scrap books for every year of school from eighth grade through college! I figured surely there would be some material in there!
Do you have any special writing habits?
Yes! I do have writing habits. I am an avid walker. I walk miles and miles daily. Each day I would think about my storyline and what would happen next. I wasn’t always sure! I would think about my derelict teen years, and my experiences. I would listen to music from the time period in my earbuds and let the lyrics inspire me. Lots of people know that music is a big part of April’s Heart, with almost 40 Spotify music links embedded into the ebook text!
When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?
I have now started three more stories. Two related to April’s Heart, and one a friends to lovers stand alone. I guess I have three WIP because I actually don’t know where they’re going! I will be lucky if ANY of them actually get written!
In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?
I’ve only written one book so can’t answer that part, and my favorite book? that’s so hard too. I loved The Orphan Train, The Time Traveler’s Wife, jeez, there’s so many.
How do you feel after writing a book?
I have a great picture of me in front of my front door the Saturday morning after April’s Heart became live on Amazon. I was heading out to do my normal grocery shopping but somehow felt different! I posted it on Facebook with something like, “I look the same, yet somehow feel different!” I felt accomplished and that the journey had come to its fruition.
Tell us about your latest book and please put the link so our readers can find it.
My one and only book so far is April’s Heart, which I feel your readers will tremendously enjoy. It has been extremely well received. It tells the coming of age story of April Schweiter who, in eighth grade, falls HARD for her love interest, Mitch Hudgins. She is met with many obstacles to overcome, not the least being her overbearing and oppressive mother. April and Mitch finally find some peace when they realize that going to different private high schools in different towns means that their relationship should probably come to an end. But can it? Does it? Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZZJ1WR7
