Author Interview

Sophia Thorne

Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we?!

My name is Sophia Thorne, and I am an author and editor living in New York. I enjoy writing about complex, troubled heroines navigating difficult circumstances and the men who fall for them, and am at work on my debut romance duet–Desire and Social Distance, forthcoming in February 2021. My erotica collection, Five Erotic Frolics, is available for free on Kindle Unlimited. This is my pen name–under my real name I am the founding Editor-in-Chief of a popular literary horror magazine, and run a small book editing business. I am also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the forthcoming romance magazine Shimmer Noir.

What prompted you to pursue a career as a writer?

I have always been in love with words. I was reading well before kindergarten, and a poem I wrote in 3rd grade got me inducted into the Gifted and Talented program. In middle school, I wrote a novel series about a psychotic band director who stalked and terrorized her students. In 2014 I had my first traditional poem publication, and have been traditionally published in short form seventeen times since then. I came to realize that being a writer is inseparably fused with my personality–I write about everything. I process my thoughts through journaling, my emotions through poetry, and my desires through romance and erotica. Why wouldn’t I try to align who I am on the inside with who I am on the outside? Writing was always my intended career.

Do you have any special writing habits?

Absolutely. I block scenes in third person present, but write the finished text in first person past–a masochistic practice to be sure.

When you write a new book, do you already have the whole story in mind or do you elaborate it along the way?

I have the basic plot points in place and a list of scenes that are needed or have occurred to me, but from one plot point to the next, I freewrite and make it up as I go along.

In your opinion what is the best book you have written? What’s your favourite book ever?

Currently, my only published book is Five Erotic Frolics, but I feel DESIRE AND SOCIAL DISTANCE, releasing February 2021, will be my best. It details the virtual love affair of Elena di Marco and her older former professor Greyson Jameson, who was the mentor for her senior honors thesis during undergrad twenty years prior to their rediscovering each other on Facebook. It tackles the new realities of COVID-19 as it chronicles the way two people can achieve intimacy and love, even if travel bans prevent them from having a physical relationship.

How do you feel after writing a book?

Like my brain just experienced an intense BDSM scene. I am in need of aftercare. Ha!

Five Erotic Frolics is a delightfully dirty frolic through an unnamed narrators five trysts, which span multiple kinks. It’s not an erotic romance, but a good introduction to my writing style. I was praised for working the word “nasturtiums” into a naughty erotica piece. You may purchase the book on Amazon here:

Book One of The Distance Duet, DESIRE AND SOCIAL DISTANCE, is releasing in February of 2021. Here’s the blurb: Elena di Marco is depressed. On the heels of a brutal divorce from her husband of ten years, Elena’s life seems empty and meaningless. She works a dead end job in Buffalo, New York, struggles to make ends meet, and goes home alone each night to an empty apartment to sob in her isolation. But all of that changes in March 2020, when she reconnects with a former professor from twenty years ago on Facebook. Greyson Jameson was a professor of English literature where Elena earned her BA in 2002, was the mentor for Elena’s senior honors thesis, and still teaches American Literature courses at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, which is where Elena grew up. After two decades of being out of touch, Elena and Greyson are delighted to know one another again, and bond quickly over Facebook Messenger. Despite Greyson being fifteen years Elena’s senior, a relationship is born, and despite Elena’s living in New York and Greyson’s living in Nebraska, the two chat all day every day. As the intimacy between Greyson and Elena grows, so does their desire to see one another face to face. Unfortunately, however, their rediscovery of one another coincides with another life-altering event: the outbreak of COVID-19. Due to travel restrictions in place because of the pandemic, Elena and Greyson are forced to settle for keeping their affair relegated to the virtual realm. But then disaster strikes. Greyson’s estranged wife–who has been away in residential drug rehab for ten months–is forced to move back in with Greyson and their two children due to the quarantine, throwing a wrench into Greyson and Elena’s budding romance. But closeness is not always a matter of proximity, and the connection between Elena and Greyson is strong. But is it strong enough to prevent Greyson’s reconciliation with the mother of his kids? As the stakes rise and time begins to run out, Elena braces herself for the fight of her life and will stop at nothing to get what she wants–the chance to study at the feet of Greyson Jameson once more.
